Individual Counseling

Individual Counselling is a structured, client centered, interactive communication process in which one-person helps others make free, informed decisions about their personal behavior and provides support to them to act on their decisions.  It can also be defined as a process of helping a client explore the nature of a problem so that they can determine what to do, without direction from the counsellor.

In general counselling is an interactive process characterized by a unique relationship between counsellor and client that leads to change in the client in one or more of the following:

  1. Behavior (overt changes in the ways clients act, their coping skills, decision making skills, and/or relationship skills).
  2. Beliefs and values (ways of thinking about self, others, and the world) or emotional concerns relating to these perceptions.
  3. Level of emotional distress (uncomfortable feelings or reactivity to environmental stress).
